And now for our final Oscar review, the Best Director category! Let's dive in because my brain is fried.
Didn't Watch: Zone of Interest
We've established this. Moving on.
4. Anatomy of a Fall
I thought the directing in this movie was great, but it didn't wow me quite as much. The flow was good, the cinematography was good, the editing choices were good, it was all good. but I don't think it's taking the Oscar.
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
This was truly an epic and I think it's a classic Scorsese masterpiece. And I appreciate that he toned back the violence to just include what was necessary to get the point across, as the tribe of today requested. He still managed to make it his own and I thought a lot of the choices bolstered the story and the message.
2. Poor Things
Despite the Paris sequence, I thought this was a truly artistic movie. The directing choices and the aesthetic were one-of-a-kind and there was a clear vision that Lanthimos expertly carried out. Was it perfect? No, but I think it did very well for itself.
1. Oppenheimer
Yeah, this one was the kind of movie that defines directors. I think Nolan is taking the Oscar. Again, not perfect, but there were so many excellent scenes and incredible sequences that I think it's still a head above the others. I won't be surprised when he wins this one.
And that's it! There are lots of other categories, so let me know what some of your picks are this year. And stay tuned for our regularly scheduled Unhelpful Reviews!
