We're back to categories where I haven't seen all the movies. But we're wrapping up the acting categories with Best Supporting Actress! Let us apply our extensive knowledge to this category that I am most definitely qualified to discuss!
Didn't Watch: Danielle Brooks - The Color Purple
To be fair, I've never seen the original movie or read the book. Which probably isn't the best defense, but I'm open to doing a review later on. But I ran out of time for this year's Oscars. I'm very sorry. Danielle Brooks, I'm sure you were fantastic and I wish the best of luck. But I did not watch The Color Purple.
Didn't Watch: Jodie Foster - Nyad
Call me a bad feminist. I didn't watch Nyad. Which I think we'd already established. But I do like Jodie Foster so I wish her the best of luck.
3. America Ferrara - Barbie
I understand this nomination a little more than I understand the Ryan Gosling nomination, but it's still going at the bottom of my list. She was good and the monologue about being a modern woman was undoubtedly a high point in that movie. There was nothing bad about her performance but it didn't necessarily blow me away. But still very good.
2. Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer
Again, these top two are very difficult to choose from, but I'm putting Emily Blunt at number 2. What we saw of her was so good, and the interrogation scene was incredible. Honestly, I think I just wanted more. She brought it to every scene, but there weren't enough scenes to really feel great about it. They kind of glossed over her supposed alcoholism and the parts of the movie when she really seemed to be struggling. I would have loved to have seen more of that. But what we did see was fantastic and if she takes the Oscar, I won't be disappointed.
1. Da'Vine Joy Randolph - The Holdovers
And the Unhelpful Reviews Oscar goes to!
She was the heart of The Holdovers. From her no-nonsense attitude to her emotional turmoil over the loss of her son, she showed real range and real heart. That party scene was excellent. And even the scenes where she was just kind of there, she brought so much presence and even a calm. She embodied that character so well that I wanted to meet her. I think that's the mark of an excellent performance. I wanted to meet her and to know her. And I loved that they gave her some final scenes with her sister. I just loved her performance so much and her character. I genuinely hope she wins.
And that's it for acting! Onto writing! Let me know who you think is taking home the Oscar!
